There Is a Before and an After
Ask any woman who owns a Tussar silk saree when she first wore one. She will remember. Not because it was the most glamorous occasion, but because of the moment she put it on and felt something shift. The weight of it. The texture against her skin. The way it moved when she walked. The way people looked at her — not because she was overdressed, but because she was exactly right.
That is what a well-made Tussar silk saree does. It does not announce itself. It simply makes everything around it look like it is trying too hard.
At Dakshin Vastram, we source this saree from the handloom communities of eastern India and bring it to you — in London, Stratford, Barking, Dagenham, Hackney, Bethnal Green, Los Angeles, San Jose, Vienna, and Stockholm.
The Silk That Comes from Somewhere Real
Tussar silk begins in the wild. The Antheraea mylitta silkworm — larger, hardier, and more independent than its Mulberry counterpart — builds its cocoon on the branches of Arjun and Asan trees in the forests of Jharkhand and Bihar. It is not farmed. It is not controlled. It simply does what it has always done, in the places it has always done it.
The silk it produces carries this wildness in its character. It is textured where Mulberry is smooth. It is warm where Mulberry is cool. It is earthy where Mulberry is refined. And for the woman who has worn both, there is no contest — Tussar has a soul that cultivated silk simply cannot manufacture.
Handwoven in Eastern India. Worn Across the World.
The Tussar sarees at Dakshin Vastram are woven by artisans whose relationship with this silk spans generations. They work in the handloom clusters of Bhagalpur in Bihar — known as the silk city of India — and in the weaving villages of Jharkhand, where the craft is as much a part of daily life as the forest itself.
Each saree is woven on a traditional pit loom or frame loom, thread by thread, with patterns that have been refined over decades. The borders — whether geometric, floral, or inspired by tribal motifs — are woven in, not printed on. They are part of the fabric, not applied to it. This distinction matters enormously, and it shows.
Occasions That Belong to Tussar
- Durga Puja & Navratri — The goddess deserves silk that comes from the earth, not the factory
- Wedding ceremonies & receptions — Tussar is the saree that photographs beautifully and feels even better in person
- Diwali & Bhai Dooj — Celebrate the season of warmth in a silk that embodies it
- Theatre & cultural evenings — From London's Barbican to Vienna's Burgtheater, Tussar is the saree for people who take culture seriously
- First saree moments — For the woman wearing a saree for the first time, Tussar is the one that will make her want to wear it again
- Milestone gifting — The saree you give when you want to give something that lasts
Why Dakshin Vastram for Your Tussar
Bhagalpur produces a great deal of Tussar. Not all of it is equal. The difference between a saree woven with care and one woven for volume is visible, tangible, and significant. At Dakshin Vastram, we make that distinction for you — selecting only pieces that meet our standard for silk quality, weave density, and pattern integrity.
