A Bishnupur Katan silk saree from West Bengal, distinguished by hand block printing on pure silk. Bishnupur — the temple town of West Bengal, known for its terracotta architecture and classical arts — has two great craft traditions: its silk weaving and its block printing. This saree brings them together. The Katan silk base is handwoven with the characteristic density and drape of Bishnupur's weaving tradition; the block print motifs are drawn from the town's terracotta heritage — floral, geometric, and figurative patterns pressed into the silk by hand. Made for Durga Puja, weddings, Diwali, and the occasions that appreciate craft with a story behind every mark.
Two Traditions, One Saree
Bishnupur is a town that has always expressed itself through its hands. Its terracotta temples — built by the Malla kings between the 17th and 18th centuries — are covered in hand-pressed relief panels depicting scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and daily life. Its weavers have produced Katan silk for centuries, developing a fabric known for its tight weave, natural lustre, and exceptional drape. The Bishnupur Silk Block Print brings these two traditions into a single object: the silk carries the weaving heritage, and the block print carries the visual language of the terracotta town. The motifs — pressed into the silk by hand using carved wooden blocks — echo the patterns that cover Bishnupur's temple walls.
Silk That Holds the Print
Katan silk is a tightly woven pure silk with a natural weight and lustre that makes it an ideal ground for block printing. The fabric holds the print with precision, allowing the carved block motifs to register clearly against the silk ground. It drapes with quiet authority, holds its structure through a long day of celebration, and develops a richness with wear that printed synthetics cannot replicate. The pallu (the decorative end of the saree draped over the shoulder) carries the most concentrated block print composition, while the border and body carry supporting motifs that build the visual whole.
Design from the Temple Town
The block print motifs on this saree are drawn from Bishnupur's terracotta visual vocabulary — the same patterns that cover the Rasmancha, the Jorbangla temple, and the Shyamrai temple. Floral compositions, geometric borders, and figurative details pressed into silk by hand, one block at a time. The colour palette is warm and considered, chosen to let the print carry its heritage clearly.
Occasions and Global Reach
A natural choice for Durga Puja in Kolkata and Bengaluru, for wedding receptions in Mumbai and Delhi, and for Diwali evenings in London, Birmingham, and Sydney. It suits Navratri celebrations, Onam gatherings in Chennai, Karva Chauth pujas, and cultural galas in New York, Toronto, or Dubai. For the Indian diaspora in Manchester, Melbourne, or New Jersey seeking a saree that carries Bishnupur's dual craft heritage — or for a Raksha Bandhan gift, a bride's trousseau, or any occasion that appreciates craft with a story behind every mark — this piece arrives already carrying two traditions.
Pair with the included silk blouse piece, antique gold or terracotta jewellery, and a traditional drape. Two traditions, one occasion.
