A handwoven Garad pure silk saree from Bishnupur, West Bengal — made from pure mulberry silk in its natural, undyed ivory on traditional pit looms. Blouse piece included. A saree made to outlast its first wearing — to be folded carefully, stored in muslin, and one day passed on. A Bishnupur Garad is not acquired for a season; it is kept for a lifetime.

An Heirloom in the Making

Some sarees are worn once and cherished always. The Garad is one of them. In Bengali households, a Garad silk saree from Bishnupur, Bankura district, West Bengal, is among the most considered additions to a woman's collection — chosen not for trend, but for the occasions it will accompany across a lifetime: a daughter's wedding, the first Durga Puja in a new city, a Saraswati Puja worn year after year until the silk itself carries the memory of every ritual. Pure mulberry silk, woven without dye, does not date. The Garad's natural ivory is as current today as it was three generations ago.

Fabric & Craft Details

Woven in Bishnupur on traditional pit looms by artisan families who have worked with pure silk for generations, this Garad is made entirely from pure mulberry silk — its ivory colour coming from the silk's own natural warmth, not from bleaching or chemical treatment. The fabric is smooth, weighty, and structured: it drapes with gravity and intention, holding its pleats through long puja days and formal ceremonies. The pallu (the decorative end panel draped over the shoulder) and border carry traditional Bengal design elements woven in the silk's own colour. Butis (small repeating woven motifs) may appear across the body, visible only in certain light — a characteristic of the finest Garad weaves.

Occasions & Gifting

A deeply personal festive and ritual saree for Durga Puja, Saraswati Puja, Lakshmi Puja, and Bengali wedding ceremonies across Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune. Among the Indian diaspora in London, New York, Toronto, Sydney, and Melbourne, a Garad from Bishnupur is one of the most meaningful pieces a family can bring from home — or send abroad for a daughter's first puja season in a new country. A considered Raksha Bandhan or wedding-season gift that will be remembered long after the occasion.

Styling Suggestions

The Garad's ivory speaks for itself. For pujas, pair with minimal gold jewellery and a red bindi. For weddings, contrast with a deep red or coral blouse and gold temple ornaments — one of the most enduring colour combinations in Indian textile tradition. The included matched blouse piece is ready to wear for ritual occasions without alteration.
