The Baluchari is one of the oldest and most distinctive narrative handloom traditions of Bengal. Unlike sarees that carry decorative or abstract motifs, a Baluchari tells a story: the pallu (the decorative end panel draped over the shoulder, the most visible surface of a draped saree) and borders carry complete narrative scenes — figures from the Ramayana, episodes from the Mahabharata, and courtly compositions drawn from Kalidasa's Shakuntala — woven in pure silk thread directly into the fabric. These are not prints. They are not embroideries. They are woven compositions, formed thread by thread on a traditional handloom in Bishnupur, Bankura district, West Bengal, by artisan weavers who carry the visual vocabulary of these narratives as a living craft tradition.
