The Saree I Wore for Diwali Zoom Call – Because Ma Was Watching
Share
Diwali in London is cold.
Not because of the weather — but because ma isn’t around to warm the house with her oil lamps and halwa smell.
This year, like every year since I moved abroad, we did a family Zoom call.
Maa, baba, cousins — all in Kolkata, laughing, lighting diyas.
And me, staring through a screen, trying not to cry.
But this year, I did something different.
I wore a Dakshin Vastram pure silk saree — bottle green, gold border, just like the one maa had gifted me before I left.
The moment I appeared on screen, ma gasped.
“O maa! You’re wearing that saree? You look just like I imagined.”
For 10 minutes, she forgot I wasn’t there.
She told baba, “Look at her! My daughter still remembers our traditions.”
And I? I felt wrapped in love — six yards of emotion, memory, and celebration.
Because sometimes, a saree is more than a saree.
It’s a connection — to people, to places, to a past we never want to lose.
This Diwali, wear what your maa wants to see.
