The Saree I Sent My Sister This Diwali – A Story of Two Continents

Last Diwali, I cried while folding the saree.

It wasn’t just fabric. It was a part of our childhood.

My sister and I used to help maa fold sarees — she would hold one end, I the other.

We’d laugh, trip, fight, and feel grown-up.

And now? She’s in Leicester. I’m in Kolkata.

So last Diwali, I opened Dakshin Vastram’s website.

I chose a rich Baluchari silk saree — deep maroon with golden motifs.

Just like maa’s favourite.

I clicked “Ship to UK.”

And I wrote a note:

“For the one who always held the other end of maa’s saree.”

When she received it, she sent me a voice note crying.

Not because it was beautiful (though it was).

But because for a moment, that saree made her feel home.

This Diwali, let sarees be more than clothes.

Let them be stories.

Let them be love, folded and boxed and delivered across oceans.
