Muga silk: the golden silk of Assam

Muga is Assam's signature. Spun by the semi-domesticated Antheraea assamensis silkworm, it has a natural golden sheen that deepens with every wash rather than fading. A Muga mekhela chador is often passed down through generations, which tells you most of what you need to know about its strength.

Eri silk: the gentle, warm weave

Eri is soft, matte and surprisingly warm, with a wool-like drape that suits cooler weather and everyday wear. Because the moth leaves the cocoon before the yarn is harvested, Eri is often called ahimsa or peace silk. It takes natural dyes beautifully and ages into something even softer.

Mulberry silk: the classic lustre

Mulberry silk brings the smooth, fluid fall and bright lustre most people picture when they think of silk. In Assam it is woven in Sualkuchi alongside Muga and Eri, and it is the easiest of the three to style for weddings, receptions and festive evenings.

Assam silk and the Mekhela Chador

"Assam silk" usually means these three together: Muga, Eri and Mulberry (Pat). The garment they are most famous for is the mekhela chador, a two-piece drape where the mekhela is pleated at the waist and the chador is draped over the shoulder. Worn at Bihu, at weddings and at Durga Puja, it is elegant, comfortable and unmistakably Assamese.
